Do-it-yourself walkthrough

PSLF: prepare your application step by step.

This guide helps you get organized before using the government’s official PSLF Help Tool. It does not determine eligibility or submit an application for you.

Your checklist progress0 of 8 complete
Before you begin: Federal Student Aid’s PSLF Help Tool is free. Never share your StudentAid.gov password or verification code with us or any third party. Eligibility and qualifying-payment counts are determined through the official program.
01

Find your federal loan details

Sign in directly at StudentAid.gov and review your loan types and servicer information. PSLF generally applies to eligible Direct Loans; other federal loan types may require additional steps.

02

Review your employer

Gather your employer’s full legal name, work address, and employer identification number if available. Use the official tool to check employer eligibility or request a review.

03

Collect your employment dates

Write down your start and end dates (if applicable), whether you still work there, and your average weekly hours. Ask your employer’s HR team who is authorized to certify employment.

04

Check your repayment and payment history

Review current official guidance and the payment count shown in your account. Do not assume every past payment or repayment period qualifies.

05

Choose the official completion route

The PSLF Help Tool can help check employers, prepare the form, request an employer’s electronic signature, and submit electronically. This is usually the clearest route to follow.

06

Review every field before signing

Confirm your information and employment periods. Your employer or authorized official must certify the employment section. Do not sign information you know is incorrect.

07

Submit through the official channel

Follow the submission instructions in the Help Tool. If you use a paper form, follow the current official instructions for signatures and delivery. A downloaded blank form alone is not a submitted application.

08

Keep a copy and check your status

Save your confirmation and a copy of what you submitted. Check your StudentAid.gov account for updates and contact Federal Student Aid if something looks wrong.

The blank PDF is hosted by StudentAid.gov. The online Help Tool is the official route for employer checks, electronic certification, and electronic submission. Confirm the latest instructions at the official site before sending paperwork.

About guided forms and privacy

This page is a self-guided educational checklist—not a government application, eligibility decision, or legal/financial advice. The checkboxes are saved only in the open page session; they do not transmit information to USA Student Network.

We intentionally do not ask for Social Security numbers, StudentAid.gov credentials, verification codes, medical records, or signed government forms here. Any future form-filling or document-review service would need a separately built secure workflow, clear consent, and careful testing before launch.
